Jamie Baldridge – Photoshop artist
I have large numbers of old UK computer and photography magazines lying around the house. For some reason I can read and reread these countless times without ever getting bored, Some form of compulsive behavior no doubt.
Most of these magazines have a portfolio section where artists and designers can submit their work. Many years ago I had a page devoted to my then web site on PC Format, one such publication but I am not going to link to anything from that period out of shear embarrassment. Anyway back to the point, one of my guilty pleasures is to look back on these old magazines and see what I think of the art work the portfolio sections many years after the event.
An artist called Jamie Baldridge was featured in the Digital Creative Arts Photoshop Special Edition Number 10 – nice catchy title there. He does amazing stuff with Photoshop, producing some wonderful surreal images that evoke the Victorian love of invention and classical science allied with a dreamlike whimsical quality. The thing that stands out though is an unerring compositional sense.
Even the titles possess a certain poetry and are obviously as carefully thought out as the paintings themselves. A couple of my favorite examples are, ‘Velocity of the Dendrites’ and ‘The Martyrdom of Saint Tilden.’
Jamie’s art is arguable the best merging of an Old Master type sensibility with the digital age. Nothing forced about this marraige at all.
Jamie’s web site is here and a little explanation is required, hit the four buttons running horizontally at the bottom of the box like to see the work.;
My only complaint is that the web site (Flash) is a little clunky but it is worth the slightly extended wait just to see the images. Go have a look now!
