The Age of Stupid

From The New Scientist

No one likes being preached to, and that doesn’t bode well for any documentary that sets out to tackle climate change.

The latest attempt at this is a semi futuristic, semi-documentary film called The Age of Stupid. It kicks off in 2055, on a flooded, damaged, inhospitable Earth. Somewhere in the midst of a rough ocean a lone man lives in a massive tower that looks like it was bred from an oil rig crossed with Dr No’s ocean hideaam allway. The man, played by Pete Postlethwaite, muses about why humans did not do something to stop climate change when there was still time to – which is to say, now.

Looks interesting, personally would have preferred the title “The Stupid – It Burns.

The point made here is that hindsight is a wonderful thing. The Age of Stupid is an attempt to provide that hindsight while there is still time to act. It may not make for rivetting blockbuster viewing (or even fringe viewing: the movie was rejected by the Sundance Festival) but the idea is good. No doubt campaigners will like it – already Greenpeace and others are lining up to promote it.

Personally I hope that the movie does really well and even if it is cheesy the idea is an excellent one. Presenting the present as past and therefore cause is a good device

Unfortunately the stupids won’t go within a mile of this movie and that is just to bad.

Looking forward to the Drill Baby Drill lobby’s movie length response – will no doubt feature a blond in a black pant suit striding purposefully and talking in depth about how a day in December in one place was a degree colder than average and how this proves that global warming is a myth created by the lefties to destroy the American way. Quick mention of the fact that the process is actually referred to as climate change and not global warming but that would sort of destroy there only argument.
