In defense of Kubrick

This has nothing to do with the man responsible for such classic movies as Space Odyssey or Clockwork Orange but rather something much more mundane, unless you develop blogs that is. You see Kubrick is the theme that is delivered with Wordpress and I would venture to guess that the majority of Wordpress blogs out there are variations of the Kubrick them. The one you are currently reading is as is this one and this one

Here is the basic Kubrick installation:
 In defense of Kubrick

Converting a blog from the vanilla Kubrick to something like this really involves very little work.
Build something that you like the look of in a graphics editor, chop it up then use the resulting files to overwrite the files that come with the theme. In the case of this blog that gives you the header with the two images, the stripes down the left hand side of the page and the footer with the little image.

Then hit the css page, that gives you in this case, the yellow quote boxes with stripes, all font settings and the backgrounds to the individual posts. Comment pages etc can also be changed (I haven’t bothered).

There are also files with the php extension, these are a little more complex and can be changed with a light touch, as on this site, not at all, or drastically.

This post posits the question that the Kubrick theme is outdated and that something else should ship with the basic Wordpress install.

 In defense of Kubrick

To be honest the author is correct, there are now way better ways to build a basic theme that can be modified with even more ease and with less workarounds. I will still miss Kubrick though when it bites the dust as it inevitably will.

At this time all the commenters agree that Kubrick has had it’s day.
