A Better Man Than Newt

Not a high bar I know but this is worth noting. Conservative commentator Rod Dreher over at belief.net admits that his initial thoughts on the whole, trumped up by Gingrich and FNC, Sotomayor is a racist issue were wrong. He says since reading the entire speech, he has reversed his opinion.

Dreher does say that he is still a bit troubled by Sotomayor’s remark. Great word troubled, makes the user sound a little more intelligent than the standard issue GOP thugs but probably appeases them just enough not to turn on the user. I heard it several times yesterday and expect to hear it a lot more over the coming days.

The Reublicans will divide along those lines, the Gingrich, Limbaugh, FNC bigots who go full throttle on the reverse racism thing because you know that white males of European descent have had such a hard time historically and those that want to emerge as the thoughtful wing of the Republican party. Mark my words, Republicans in denial will use racist and those with an eye to winning the next elections will use troubled.

He goes on to say that empathy isn’t a bad thing either. Pity he knee jerked before he fact checked but kudos for at least having the balls to do the right thing. No doubt Dreher’s ethics attack will have a cost along with an email inbox full of semi literate hate mail with one or two threats thrown in from those that claim to be on his side of the political divide.
