Washington Times in Trouble? – Hope so
This story warmed the cockles of my heart (whatever that means). The Washington Times is an extreme right wing rag owned paper espousing an extreme right wing agenda. My reaction to such an organization in deep trouble would normally be along the lines of so what but this is a little different.
I am pretty sure that a large number of Americans do not know that there is a huge difference between papers like the mainstream New York Times and The Washington Post and the extremist Washington Times. The broadcast media often have writers from all three organizations on their news and current affairs shows without giving background. This automatically elevates the Washington Times to a level of serious newspaper and it’s writers to the level of serious commentators.
It is worth noting that I am not a huge fan of news organizations like the New York Times and the Washington Post. There standards are sloppy and, certainly in the case of the NYT, their ethics are extremely questionable. Who can forget hack Judith Miller carrying water for Cheney and the bush administration during the CIA leak scandal.
but as bad as they are they are not in the same league as the Washington Times which was after all founded by the chief Moonie with the express mission of countering the perceived threat of communism.
So the next time you see the face of Tony Blankley (above) on Meet the Press or Hardball for instance, just remember who pays his salary. and the next time you see him on a panel with, say Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post (arguably the best and most accomplished news person working today) that they are far from equal in either ability or more importantly in intent.
