The Palin Enigma

Pop quiz: where does the following originate?

I wish Barack Obama well as the 44th president of the United States. If he governs America with the skill and grace we have often seen in him, and the greatness of which he is capable, we’re gonna be just fine. And when a black citizen prepares to fill the office of Washington and Lincoln, that is a shining moment in our history that can be lost on no one….

If it wasn’t for the colloquial “gonna” this could have easily come from the keyboard of Eugene Robinson or the voice of Rachel Maddow. The gonna is the clue – it was part of the concession speech that Palin, quite rightly, was never allowed to deliver.

Interesting, seeing as how she has an incredibly deep appeal to an incredibly racist minority. Her fan base would absolutely balk at this, especially this part:

And when a black citizen prepares to fill the office of Washington and Lincoln, that is a shining moment in our history that can be lost on no one….

Her support, which basically comprises the birther / bagger / 9/12er brigade are incredibly racist although they have just about enough sense to reign it in when normal people are around. If you need evidence do a search on twitter using the acronym tcot (What this stands for is unimportant, the fact that it will put you in the middle of Palin’s supporters thought processes is what matters). A Google image search will also throw up many blatantly racist signs that appear at the various events promoted by the likes of Fox News and Freedomworks.

bottom line, this quote from Palin, possibly the only classy thing to emerge from the whole Wassila trainwreck, really isn’t going to endear her to her rabidly xenophobic base.
