Time for Harry Reid to Step Down

The time has come for Harry Reid to give up his position as Senate Majority Leader. His insipid and weak performance to date would be enough to justify his resignation but that is not the the primary reason for this call. The primary reason is his massive conflict of interests. Even by normal senate standards Reid is compromised to the point where he has to act against the best interests of both the party and the American electorate.

Harry is up for a very tough reelection battle in his home state of Nevada this cycle. To win this battle he is going to need an abundance of cash and goodwill. Here is the particular swamp that Reid tops up his campaign war chest from: These lists are based on 2005 – 2010 amounts.

GOP Attempting to Oust Reid

I don’t really understand why the Republicans are launching a fairly concerted attack on Harry Reid. surely undermining him to the point where he’d have to step down would do the Democrats more favors than the Republicans.

I would hope, that if the GOP succeed with this folly that the Dems would have the sense to show the Conservadems a middle finger and elect a good solid Dem who’s own electoral position is secure.

I really cannot see this push by the Republicans working though, accusing someone else of racism – glass houses come immediately to mind.

Billions for the Banks Squat for the People

This is nice:

NEW YORK (Reuters) – The U.S. government “quietly” agreed not to collect billions of dollars in potential taxes from Citigroup Inc as part of its deal to allow the bank to repay its taxpayer bailout, The Washington Post reported.

Talking Points Memo commenting on Washington Post Article

This administration has quietly handed over billions to those friendly people from Citibank. Thats billions with a “b” and apparently this deal applies to the other banks involved in the bailout.

So, the Administration which de facto gave the order for the Senate Democrats to continue gutting health care reform* quietly shunts a gift of billions to the banks.

Can this get any worse?
and
Are the Dems trying to throw away the 2010 and 2012 elections?

*There is no other interpretation that can be put on Obama’s instruction to Reid to cave to Leiberman.

Harry Reid is Responsible for Public Option

Jane Hamsher at Firedoglake is doing exactly the right thing by placing the onus for the public option firmly on the shoulders of Harry Reid. He is the leader of the senate Dems therefore the buck stops with him. If Ben Nelson. Landriew or Lincoln defect it is Reid’s fault. Leadership is sometimes about forcing people to do what they don’t want to do, not just appeasing and counting heads.

We need to stop letting the leadership of our party diffuse responsibility to the point where no one is accountable, after all, wasn’t that one of our issues with the previous administration?

Below is the text of the petition that can be used to get your feelings on the matter across to Reid. Click here to sign

Sign our Petition to Harry Reid:

“The power to pass a public option is yours alone. Don’t let corrupt Democratic senators owned by insurance industry lobbyists kill the public option and majority rule. Get them in line, or use reconciliation to pass a public option with a majority vote.”

As the majority leader of the Senate, the power to pass a public option is squarely in Harry Reid’s hands. Fifty-one Senators have said they would vote for a bill with a public option — no opt-outs, no triggers. That’s a majority. Will Reid let three or four corrupt Senators owned by the insurance industry hold the public option hostage? Or will he use the reconciliation process to allow a simple majority vote on a public option?

Go on sign the petition, you know you want to!
