Obama Should be Drawing Down in Afghanistan
Opinion – (even more so than usual)
A quick thought about Afghanistan and Obama’s decision to ramp up the troop numbers.
Obama was very much for the Afghanistan war during his election campaign. Is it possible that the reason he was so pro this campaign was to provide a foil for his anti Iraq war stance?
This way he could oppose a deeply unpopular war (Iraq) but still appear strong on National Security by taking an extremely hawkish position re Afghanistan.
We all know that, to stand a chance of winning the US Presidency one must show a definite willingness if not pleasure at the thought of killing foreigners and blowing up their stuff. Yep, the extreme right, especially the neocons have poisoned the well that much.

Why Obama Sould Grant Onyango Legal Status
Obama Staying out of Aunt’s Immigration Process
This is a sad story on two levels, the human and the political. Apparently Obama has an aunt, Zeituni Onyango, who has lived in the US illegally and is currently going through the legal immigration process. Obama is her only family in the US and there has been no contact.
Onyango lives in public housing and has medical condition, Guillian-Barre syndrome.

Evan Bayh; Taxes are For Killing People
…..and Blowing Stuff Up
Writing about Evan Bayh’s complete lack of principle is like shooting a whale in a thimble – it is far to easy, he doesn’t even try very hard anymore. He seems to know that he is seen as a weasel on both sides of the political divide and is happy to have fun with it.

Stephen Buyer’s Problems Mount
Stephen Buyer – the Arrogance of Power
UPDATE via The Rachel Maddow Show MSNBC
The $25k seed money for the foundation came from big pharma. The Frontier foundation called CBS after the interview to confirm this – obviously realizing the Buyer was likely to get crucified for his response to this part of the interview. If you haven’t read this article this update will make sense as you proceed – honest!
Stephen Buyer (pronounced boo-yar) is the US House of Representatives, representing Indiana’s 4th Congressional District
There have been rumblings for some time now about Buyer’s (pronounced boo-yar) Frontier Education Foundation not-for-profit. It was originally set up to award scholarships to college students. As far as can be ascertained not one scholarship has been awarded yet approximately $350,000 cannot be accounted for in the foundations assets. It is known that some of this money went on golf outings and that the people on these golf trips were donors to Buyer’s (pronounced boo-yar) election funds.
Frontier Education Foundation
The Frontier Education Foundation, a group whose primary stated purpose is educational funding for college students and which (according to tax documents) shares an office with Buyer’s district office in Monticello, Indiana, has recently come under scrutiny. Tax reports indicate that while the foundation has received $830,148 from contributors since its founding, the fair market value of its net assets totaled just $482,761 by the end of 2008. This disparity has attracted attention because the foundation cannot document having actually rewarded any scholarships, and a local high school which keeps a file of regional scholarship resources was reported to have had no record of the organization. According to publicly-available documents, organizations with an interest in legislation which Buyer—through his committee memberships—had some measure of influence over contributed several thousand dollars to the Frontier Education Foundation in Buyer’s name. When questioned as to the relationship between Buyer and the Frontier Education Foundation, Buyer’s press secretary, Anjulen Anderson, was quoted as stating “It’s not Congressman Buyer’s foundation”

Transparency – now there is a novel concept
One minor complaint that my inner geek insists on airing – the text is actually a graphic and weighs in at over 30kb. Any self respecting web developer would have used text and even if they didn’t use text they would have made that graphic no bigger than around 16kb. A very small thing I know but my inner geek refuses to say nothing.
